AECT Domain:  Utilization

 

Definition.  Utilization, or implementation, considers the instructional material from the "user's perspective," as Seels and Richey (1994) write (p. 44).  Specifically, utilization considers the conditions, environment, and tools present when the learner is using the instructional materials and working through the knowledge and skills that the instructional designer intends for the learner to learn.  It can include the guidance for the learner, and even assessment of the materials' efficacy. Utilization contains four subdomains:  media utilization, diffusion of innovation, implementation and utilization, and policies and regulations.  

 

Reflection.  I associate "utilization" with the "implementation" phase of the ADDIE model of instructional design.  For me, this phase is defined by noting, and respecting, different boundaries. The boundaries that exist may be located in the learner characteristics or the instructional context, which may define or limit the types of technologies that are used in the instruction.  The boundaries may also be cultural or legal--both of which are equally important for an instructional designer to respect.  I understand the utilization process as being very tied to much of the information gained through other parts of the instructional design process, including design, development, and evaluation.  It can be challenging to identify and work within boundaries in a situation, but the experiences that I have had through the IDT program have emphasized the importance of respecting these boundaries.  I will certainly carry an awareness of this message into future teaching and learning situations where I will be making important decisions about materials and activities used for learning.

This example of the systematic use of resources for learning was developed as part of EDIT 5564:  Fundamentals of Tech Tools. For this assignment, we were asked to develop an assignment using three specific tools:  PowerPoint, Glogster, and Jing.  The documents linked here explain my interpretation of the assignment, the instructional strategy that I developed utilizing these tools, and the instructions, or content, that the learners will see.  Through these documents, the decision-making process of when and how these technologies are used is explained.

Ockham's Razor Presentation (.pptx)

 

This presentation was delivered as a "power lesson" in EDIT 5164:  Principles of Instructional Design.  The goal of this presentation was to bring about change in my fellow students' understanding of design principles that can impact the instructional design process by explaining the principle of Ockham's Razor.  The presentation's goal was to make other students aware of the principle, pique their interest, and offer examples of how the principle can be applied in instructional design.

Presentation of GRAD 5124 Evaluation Findings (.pptx)

 

This presentation was delivered to the EDIT: 5584 class as a summary of the evaluation project completed on the GRAD 5124: Library Research Skills course.  However, this presentation was also used to explain my findings to my clients and the rest of the University Libraries organization.  While it recommends certain innovations to the GRAD 5124 course, the goal of the presentation is to center these changes within the structure, behavior, and goals of the University Libraries organization.

IRB Protocol for GRAD 5124 Evaluation Project (PDF)

 

I completed my VT IRB Human Subject Protection training when I arrived at VT in Fall 2010, and have opened 9 different protocols since then.  This particular protocol was submitted for research that I conducted during EDIT 5584:  Program and Product Evaluation.  By completing this protocol, I participated in a system that supports the effective and ethical utilization of information technology for research, instruction, and learning.

Tech Tools Prezi Demonstration (web link)

 

A lighthearted example of an attempt to promote awareness of a new presentation tool--Prezi--in EDIT 5564:  Fundamentals of Tech Tools, this Prezi presentation was a collaborative project that combined using Prezi, Songify (an app), and video footage obtained using a GoPro camera.  The goal of the Prezi was not to teach learners how to use any of these tools; rather, the goal of the Prezi was to demonstrate what was possible with each of these tools in a lighthearted and humorous fashion, and make other students aware of how these tools could be used in different contexts.
