AECT Domain:  Management

Definition.  Seels and Richey (1994) write that management "involves controlling instructional technology through planning, organizing, coordinating, and supervising" (p. 49).  In other words, management provides the organization and process for how the design, development, utilization, and evaluation of instructional materials can be successfully completed within any restrictions, limitations, or other special considerations.  Specifically, management contains four subdomains: project management, resource management, delivery system management, and information management.  

 

Reflection.  Although I enjoy learning about and working within all domains associated with instructional design, I believe that the management domain is my favorite.  It may stem from my experiences and expertise gained from being a librarian; however, I also believe that it is one of the most important aspects to consider.  Without project management and the management of resources and information, no instruction could ever be completed effectively, efficiently, or really, at all.  Much of the management domain deals with being able to communicate and work with team members, but I believe that it is just as important to keep records and develop a management system even if a designer is working individually.  Going forward, I will certainly utilize the management techniques and tools, such as timelines and budgets, when working on various types of instruction-related projects whether I am working as part of a team or alone.

This particular resource could fit into any of the subdomains on this page.  I developed this site as a management resource for EDIT 5594:  Advanced Instructional Design.  The site provided a space that acted as a central repository and communication resource for the students collaborating on the LINGOs project.  It includes timelines, guidelines for delivery systems, information management, and resource management.

This needs assessment was created as part of EDIT 5564:  Fundamentals of Tech Tools.  It provides the rationale for my selection of Evernote to storage, organize, manage, retrieve, and share information during the course.

This tutorial was developed to be facilitated by instructors who did not contribute to the design or development. Therefore, this guide for instructors was created in order to support and manage the delivery of the instruction.

Evernote Tech Tools Repository (web link)

 

As a professional librarian, I am acutely aware of the need to plan for being able to access and utilize information and resources in different formats.  The repository linked here is the direct result of the storage needs assessment linked above.  It contains different resources and artifacts collected during the course, and makes them accessible to classmates and, of course future learners.

Plan for GRAD 5124 Evaluation (PDF)

 

 

This plan for the GRAD 5124 evaluation project conducted in EDIT 5584: Program and Product Evaluation details the planning and monitoring of the evaluation project.  It includes a timeline, discussion of resources available, and limitations to the project.  

 

 

 

 

Project Management of Food, Fun, and Good Nutrition Tutorial (web link)

 

As part of the semester-long group project developed for EDIT 5164:  Principles of Instructional Design, the documents linked here provide evidence of project management strategies employed by a group of four students working collaboratively to negotiate, budget, and evaluate the progress on an online tutorial we were creating.  

Style Guide for LINGOs Project (PDF)

 

This style guide was created collaboratively by my group creating a module for the LINGOs project that comprised much of the coursework in EDIT 5594:  Advanced Instructional Design.  It outlines the standards that guided the development of the interface of the module, and includes elements such as text specifications, colors, and images.

Design Document for EndNote X5 Tutorial (PDF)

 

This design document, created for EDIT 5774: Interactive Learning Media Development, describes specific design details and technical elements in addition to putting these details into context with budget, timeline, pedagogy, methodologies, learner characteristics, and context of use.  It is a thorough document that includes many elements from many different domains and subdomains, but fits best, as a whole, in the delivery system management domain since it provides a broad and deep description of how hte entire system works together and should be managed.

This plan for a portfolio program was written in EDIT 5774:  Portfolio Evaluation.  It details a potential portfolio program developed for librarians at Virginia Tech's University Libraries, and draws from my experiences with the IDT portfolio development course and program. It contains background, standards, objectives, components, and suggested assessments for the portfolio program.
